I've been a bit of an idiot, in that my COBRA from my last job is about to run out in a month and I've just started applying for continuing insurance... I've been really bummed about how much this is probably going to cost me, so I've been procrastinating. People with fibro: what has your experience been in getting individual health coverage? Do insurance companies automatically reject you and tell you to sign up for the high-risk insurance pool? Is there any chance at all that I might be able to get a less-than-astronomically-priced individual plan, or am I not going to see normal premiums again unless I shack up with somebody and mooch off their plan? Has anyone tried obtaining insurance through the Farm Bureau? Is it worth it? The only prescription drugs I take are Cymbalta, the occasional Imitrex, and hormonal birth control. I'm half tempted to just not get insurance at all... but knowing my luck I'll be sorry if I do that. Also, I'm just generally freaked out about healthcare after everything I went through last year. Hold me?

HIPPA is different than COBRA. HIPPA covers privacy laws, COBRA (as you know) is insurance after you've been let go. Start shopping around. See if you qualify for medicaid (or whatever California's version is) If you are unemployed and are single, you might qualify for the low cost state insurance. OR you can try for Medicare which is through the feds. Good luck, and start shopping and getting quotes. Come back to this thread and bitch about how annoying it all is

You might also want to look into just prescription insurance, if you can't afford/don't want to deal with full medical insurance, but still need to take your medications. I remember seeing an ad for this on television: www.pparx.org/
