Though not pain in and of itself, not being able to sleep can be caused by pain, and leads to its own forms of distress. Even now, on the eve of the first really great thing to happen in my life for months, I can't sleep much. I know I suffer from this on a daily basis, only really getting a full 6-8 hour sleep maybe once or twice a week most weeks. I'm sure most of us on here deal with this. Maybe someone out there could offer up what helps them.

Have you tried natural Melatonin? I have 10mg with two Tylenol PM (or Advil PM - just depends on what is handy). I got out like a light about 30 minutes later (If my legs agree with me). The melatonin will help your body and brain relax like it is supposed to, and help the brain kick-start it's own natural production of it, as well.

Insomnia is one of the reasons i started the chat room for the board. For those who are awake and bored.

gah...taking pills is hard for me, one because i've a super gag reflex so i'd have to crush them and then mix it into yogurt and that's nasty; and two because i don't know..just feel odd about relaying on medication

If it helps, it helps. There's a big difference between that and relying on it unnecessarily. Some people need meds to get by day to day, others need them to sleep though the night. Relying isn't always a bad thing.

There's some drinks out now that are the opposite of energy drinks. They're supposed to help you sleep. A friend at work keeps trying to get me to drink them to help me with my insomnia. He drinks them a couple times a week and says they work quite well. I will find out the name so I can pass it along to ya'll so's you can try it if you would like to. The "sleep aid" in them is melatonin.

I'm a big fan of melatonin, but that's mostly a cost thing. For a long time, I drank a mug of Sleepytime Tea from Celestial seasonings every night. The melatonin is cheaper, but I find them to be about equally effective.
A friend of mine finds better results with chamomile.

I tend to cycle between bouts of insomnia and sheer exhaustion. I figure when I can't sleep, I'll make up for it when I can do nothing but sleep.

I don't know if it would help, but eggnog chai really kind of relaxes me (without caffeine of course!)

Okay, I found out the name of the melatonin drink that my friend swears by. It's called NeuroSleep.
I also often drink hot tea when I have insomnia. It helps me get calm and relax. The one I drink most often is Sweet Dreams by Bigelow. It's a caffeine free herbal tea, has mint, chamomile, rose, and some other stuff I can't remember.

what helps me is sugared milk. just plain milk with sugar in it. it wakes me up more for a few mins, then i most of the time sleep. i wonder how much that neurosleep stuff is, sounds expensive.

When I can't fall asleep, I daydream. Sometimes making up stories in my head makes me so tired I pass out not long after. Of course, this can backfire, with me still coming up with stories an hour later...
