If you guys and gals don't already know, I stutter, I have all my life. I'm better about it now, but I still do. It's annoying as all hell and leads to me having fears about public speaking and talking on the phone and all that jazz. What doesn't help is when people laugh or snicker when I get caught on a word or at the silly contortions my face makes when it gets super bad. It makes me so angry I always want to hit the person. Ugh!

Have you tried singing your words? Someone once told me that stuttering and speaking use a different part of the brain than singing does. Not like breaking out into showtunes or anything, just a monotone note.
I can imagine the irritation you feel when people laugh at you, and all you are doing is trying to have a conversation.

I used to stutter horribly, but now I don't do it as bad. I understand a teensy bit of your pain. I have to slow my speaking waaay down, which is hard because us southerners talk slow anyway. If I'm excited, or really scared I can hardly speak because the words get stuck. :/

i need a beat to sing...even if i know the song i can't sing if i don't hear the song. I do speak quickly or very slowly when i feel it coming on, though.

I know this sounds odd, but have either of you ever had your frenulum cut or examined for where it's attached to your tongue? That's also a cause for stuttering. My sisters boyfriend had his cut when he was in high school.

You know the little flappy thingy on the bottom side of your tongue that attaches the bottom of your mouth to your tongue? It's supposed to attach to the tongue at the back, and if it's towards the tip of your tongue, it can cause you to stutter.

after shoving my finger into my mouth to gauge where that part of me is on my tongue, it seems pretty back there, and i think my doctors would have noticed it by now.

You'd be surprised how many people miss that. It's actually more often noticed by dentists! Glad to hear yours is in the correct spot tee hee!

I wouldn't laugh or giggle! I wouldn't think a bad thought of you either. Everyone has trials they need to endure, but know that you have my love and support.

I would be annoying in a different way - I have a tendency to try to finish people's sentences. I've heard you shouldn't do that with people who stutter.
My husband works with a guy who stutters - but only one on one. For whatever reason, when he's in a group and performing in a loud, booming voice, putting on a show, etc. he doesn't stutter.
