So, I've been doing cakes for my kids and nieces for their birthdays for a few years now. I'm lucky, and since I work for a large craft store chain that offers cake decorating classes, I got the classes for free. So in doing these classes, I've learned a lot of cool things and have been able to throw together some decent cakes for them for cheaper than getting one from a store bakery. I always have them pick a theme and work from that. The last few cakes I've made were unfortunately not the best work I've done. And I've found it hard to come up with new ideas or be really inspired. Until today. My middle child's birthday is fast approaching (end of month) and we're having his party with friends this weekend. I got his theme from him and I was thinking in a larger scale than I needed to at first. He wants a cake based on a video game that he got as an early present from our friend who's staying with us. (Fallout New Vegas) I was thinking, okay, I'll make a cake that's shaped like the logo. Nope. Changed my mind. I learned how to make color flow decorations and can make figures that can be placed on the cake. I am now making a character from the game and the new vegas logo out of color flow. It's going to be spectacular! I'm so excited, I had to share with everyone, lol

Even with a mom that used to work in a bakery, I don't know this. What is color flow? Other than the little question...that is crappin' awesome! I wish I were better at making cakes, the divorce cake I made for my friend was kind of...eh. Although, it was yummy.

Colorflow is kind of like meringue powder, you add it in when making your icing and it helps it hold a certain consistency and when the icing dries, it's left with a shiny finish.
I will most certainly post pics of it when it is done.

if you lived closer, I would most certainly share cake! I was going to start on it today, but never made it to the store to pick up the one thing I need to make it all possible. Colorflow. Good thing I work tomorrow and can pick it up then. I even have a coupon, which is good, because it's like $9 a freaking can!

I need to learn how to make a cake out of ice cream sandwiches. This should be an interesting experience. I don't know what to use as mortar.

basic frosting would work. You'll have to work fast though, they melt quickly.

Yes, Royal Icing is used as "glue" for many edible items. It's used to make little candies that you can put on cakes, cupcakes, cookies etc. as well as used for gluing gingerbread houses together.
