I know there are some that frown on our menagerie, but they're family and I love them all. This morning we had:
Courtney and Zera, lab-mixes; Courtney was a shelter puppy, Zera was the result of learning the hard way that when they told us Courtney was spayed, they were wrong.
Kim Possible, tarantula; rescued from the highway by the grandma of one of my kiddos.
Speedy, red-eared slider; rescued from the playground from a bunch of kindergarteners when he was just a hatchling. Options are returning him to the lagoon just off the highway, or keeping him until he's old enough to go into Grandma's pond without me worrying too much about him.
Andromeda, albino pygmy hedgehog; given to me by a coworker who could not meet her needs.
Inigo, hamster; bought for a science experiment for a kiddo whose parents would not let her keep him.
Germany, cat; farm cat from the ILs, his mother fell victim to a coyote when he was four weeks old.
Welles, the blue bunny; rescued from a kiddo's aunt who was going to serve him up for dinner.
Datura, iguana; rescued from iguana-hell. We're trying to rehome him because when we took him we had no intention of owning an iguana but knew he'd die if we didn't get him out of his old home. Today we may have found a match for him, pending some consideration from the receiving party.
We've also got some fish.
I say this morning, because today we wound up with a new baby. One of my coworkers has two dachshunds that accidentally bred and she was desperate to find homes for the results. (She meant to get the female spayed but didn't have the money.) I initially planned on giving one to MIL, but MIL said no. And then J and I talked about it, and we agreed that Rina's responsible enough to have her own pet, plus we'd be doing my coworker a favor and saving her from having to take them to a shelter or the Walmart parking lot.
